Just to play Devil's Advocate for a moment, was anybody at all concerned about the implications of this story (subs req) by Conor Lally and Barry Roche in the Irish Times yesterday:
Gardaí have begun gathering thousands of images of rioters in Dublin on Saturday and will distribute them among intelligence officers with a view to arresting and prosecuting those involved.[emphasis added]
The story's headline mentions CCTV footage, which is marginally useful to identify someone, but has little on the non-traditional media, much clearer images available elsewhere.
It also mentions, below, that gardai will be contacting photographers (of MSM outlets) to get them to sign sworn statements about the time and place of individual photos.
Gardaí investigating the riots are also planning to contact media outlets and request photographs and television images. Cameramen and photographers will be asked to give sworn statements that images which clearly identify rioters were taken in the city centre on Saturday and not at another time or location.
Senior Garda sources said the images will be gathered and sent to Garda Intelligence collators in divisional headquarters across Dublin city. These members will try to identify the rioters by cross-checking them with banks of images on file and on the Garda's Pulse computer system.
But there are probably at least as many pics avail on Flickr, individual blogs and Indymedia. Indymedia generally masks individual faces, being perhaps more attuned to the issue I'm about to raise, which is, is anybody concerned that Citizen Journo snaps might be used in future prosecutions?
More to the point, has anyone yet been contacted by gardai about an affadavit? Would you sign it? Email me.
And yes, this may wind up in a Trib piece.
PS - the above image from this thread of "alternate ending" photoshopped images of the riot's aftermath. Most are pretty funny.
